Component 1C Freire Approach
Freire main ideas and philosophies:
Freire
was known to be a voice against pedagogy. Pedagogy is a form of teaching where the teacher is presents him or herself as to
know everything and the student knows nothing. Freire desired a new liberal way for teachers to teach their students. His
main idea was to have more communication between the teacher and the student. Almost like a two way teaching method where
the teacher could even learn through the child’s eyes. Freire also spoke against the uncritical idealism which is another
approach to pedagogy. Uncritical idealism is where the teacher gets all the credit for finding new approaches of studying
something and only gives credit to him or herself and the learner is left subordinate as has no part of the learning process.
It all goes back to the teacher knows and the learner knows nothing. Freire’s philosophy of changing pedagogy is that the
teacher’s authority is necessary to the development of the learner’s freedom however he suggest that if a teacher can abandon
both the authoritarian and permissiveness ways of teaching and adopt a more liberal free environment that includes the child
ideas, there will be a more productive environment. Freire idea was if a teacher could intervene, dialogue with a student,
and to offer insights by respecting the student and never manipulating them, then that teacher would be practicing what Freire
called a progressive educator. Freire also suggested that this form of teaching is liberating and hopeful for oppressed students.
Why
would Freire ideas be a useful lens in the study of humanities:
I think Freire ideas and approaches would be a useful
lens in the study of humanities because in humanities you can never stop learning. Studying ones culture and society can take
a life time with new stuff and ideas of that culture constantly developing. If we were to use the old pedagogy approach of
the students knows nothing and the teacher is the only one that knows everything about that specific culture or society then
everyone would not be getting a full learning experience. However, if we use Freire’s ideas of progressive learning and make
an environment where everybody is using their brains together we will be able to see so much more in that culture because
everyone sees life differently. If this progressive approach is used, then instead of learning about a culture through one’s
persons eyes (the teacher’s) we could see it through a whole class room of eyes and that will lift the oppression of the everyday
learner and get them involved in a more liberating and hopeful learning structure.
